After being inspired initially from the shadows that she observed on the grass of trees and the shadows she saw on the trees, she set out in developing a process that does not portray the object in a 2D picture. Rather the subject is transformed into a re-creation of itself and the canvas transforms into the medium for it's personal interpretation by painting, particularly when the subjects are living or perishable items for example, like humans or fruit. The transient nature of her art style is apparent and what remains in Alexa Meade's art is a photographs. Because the photography and painting techniques are coordinated so closely and result in the trompe-l'oeil effect in which the illusion of 3D appears only at specific locations, like the region around the eyes or hair. At times, Meade integrates her painted models into the three-dimensional space around them, allowing the models to be part of this self-created world. Thereby repealing the boundaries between painting, photography, performances and installations.
